School Profile

Charles Kelly Elementary School is dedicated to developing young children with active and creative minds, a strong sense of understanding and compassion for others, and the courage to act on their beliefs. Our mission is centered on the whole child, supporting academic, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth in a nurturing and inclusive environment.

The school was established in August 2007 in response to overcrowding at Stonehurst Hills and Highland Park Elementary Schools. After exploring multiple options, the former St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Drexel Hill was selected as the ideal location due to its readiness and accessibility. Charles Kelly Elementary is named in honor of Charles Kelly, a respected business executive who contributed to community development and the establishment of two of Delaware County’s earliest Catholic churches.

Today, the school serves over 300 students, many of whom were previously bussed to other elementary schools from the far ends of district boundaries. Charles Kelly Elementary proudly reflects the cultural and ethnic diversity of the Upper Darby community and remains committed to preserving that richness. Seven buses transport students daily, and the school’s small size fosters a close-knit, family-like atmosphere where students and staff can build meaningful relationships.

Our team of 17 experienced classroom teachers is supported by a strong network of professionals, including two reading specialists, two special education teachers, two English Language Learner teachers, a school psychologist, a social worker, and a guidance counselor. This collaborative team works together to ensure every student receives the support they need to thrive.

Charles Kelly Elementary embraces the Responsive Classroom philosophy, emphasizing respect, responsibility, and community. Daily Morning Meetings help establish a consistent, positive start to the school day and strengthen relationships across the school. We regularly analyze student progress to identify both individual and group areas of need. This data-driven approach allows us to tailor instruction, provide enrichment, and offer remediation to support academic growth and improved performance on assessments such as the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA).

In addition to academic excellence, we are actively working to build a strong Home and School Association. We believe that family involvement plays a vital role in student success and are committed to fostering partnerships that enhance educational and social opportunities for all learners.
